For over twenty-five years, Hospice Calgary has been providing compassionate care, support, education and hope to thousands of children, teens and adults whose lives have been impacted by death. Thanks to Nexen’s support, Hospice Calgary celebrated the opening of a new Counselling and Education Centre.

The new centre, located in Calgary’s southeast, is a big change from the downtown high-rise the centre had previously occupied. This new location will help service the majority of Hospice Calgary’s clients – children, teens and adults who are coping with life-threatening illness, and anticipated or sudden death. Their programs include grief and trauma counseling, education programs and specialized camps and programs for children and teens. Programs like the Living with Cancer Program and Caregiver Support Group help adults discuss issues that come with handling difficult times.

The new location will feature a Nexen Living Room – a large multipurpose room that provides a comfortable atmosphere for engaging groups in their counseling and support groups. With an additional planned expansion, the Nexen Living Room will also have an exit leading to a new outdoor garden for patients and family members to use.

The facility offers clients a host of benefits including ground-level wheelchair access, abundant free parking, improved safety and more spaces to learn and heal. It will serve as an essential base from which Hospice Calgary can take expertise and support to those who need it - at the Centre itself, into the community and into people's homes.

Nexen’s Eric Miller, Vice President General Counsel and Secretary accepted a plaque from the Centre at their grand opening event in September. Mike Backus, Nexen’s Treasurer and Board of Director for Hospice Calgary also attended the event with members of Nexen’s Corporate Community Investment Committee. Nexen contributed a $600,000 donation to the centre’s Holding Hands, Healing Hearts community campaign, a $7 million campaign to help fund the new Centre.

In addition to our contribution to the Hospice Calgary "Holding Hands Healing Hearts" campaign, Nexen has just recently completed a three-year commitment totalling $150,000 in support of Hospice's family based programs and services.
